“I am so proud. It took a lot of work and commitment, but I put my mind to it and was able to succeed”, said Kathy Jackson, 33, at her 100lb weight loss party held on July 18th, 2015 at Murray House in Clifton.
Kathy resides at Murray House, which is one of the 12 programs operated by the Department for Persons with Disabilities (DPD). Throughout the last decade Kathy has been on a weight loss and personal health journey that has led her to become a healthier and happier individual. Kathy has successfully achieved her weight loss goals while managing a full time job, a volunteer position, family and friends.
Kathy also happens to have an intellectual disability. “When I lived at home, I ate what I wanted, when I wanted to eat it. I didn’t really think of making healthy food choices or exercising. I gained weight over time and didn’t feel that good. When I moved into Murray House, I made it a goal of mine to lose weight and be healthier.” Kathy moved into Murray House in 2008 with 5 other individuals.
“Kathy moved in to our organization when she was so young. She is a very passionate person, who just needed the right education to focus on living a healthier life. Losing 100lbs is an amazing achievement.”, said Pam Van Eck, DPD’s Director of Quality. “I use the treadmill or go for a long walk every day. We (Murray House Residents) also have a fitness volunteer, Catiana, who comes to our house to do exercises with us. I also was very patient, eat healthy and limit the junk food”, Kathy said.
“Kathy is an inspiration to all, not because she has an intellectual disability, but because she set a goal for herself and realized that the only way to reach the goal is through dedication, perseverance, and patience. We are blessed to have her as part of the DPD Family”, Scott Milliken, Catholic Charities CEO.
